Drum peel test DIN EN 2243-3 Honeycomb core composites

The Drum peel test according to DIN EN 2243-3 on honeycomb core composites with climbing drum (drum climb peel test) is used to determine the separation force / adhesion of the cover layer of a composite system (honeycomb core with a cover layer). This combination has an extreme rigidity which depends crucially on the high-quality bonding of both parts. The adhesive strength is determined using a special peeling tool. Due to the special nature of this test tool, the connection is not separated by shear force but peeled almost orthogonally.

The drum peeling tool can be easily attached to a GALDABINI universal testing machine be adapted. In addition, a simple clamping screw tool is required to which the opposite side of the cover layer is clamped and pulled at a speed of 25 mm. The force graph increases steadily in the test until a repeated spontaneous, partial detachment occurs. Little by little, the cover layer comes off. In order to avoid falsification of the adhesive force due to start-up behavior / a drop in value at the end, areas at the beginning and end are not taken into account. An adhesion average is calculated from the middle part of the gross force. This represents the adhesion force together with the drum weight and the cover layer stiffness. In a second travel section, an average force is again determined in order to determine the cover layer stiffness. The net peeling resistance (net adhesion force) is determined by subtracting the determined drum weight and determined cover layer stiffness. With the drum peeling tool, a counterweight prevents force falsification due to eccentricity.

With a GALDABINI universal testing machine you can use the method immediately if you

  • download and extract the ZIP file
  • copy into the corresponding directory (complete directory with all contents)
  • load into the list of preferred methods (browse and load *.met)
  • equipped with a peeling tool and a screw clamp
  • Adapt to your machine / test software: Select your load cell | Set the starting position of the test tool | Activate overload protection 5 kN
