Precision and quality of hardness testing devices

Developed and manufactured in the Netherlands

Get an overview of a universal hardness tester for the hardness testing methods according to Vickers ISO 6507-1, Brinell ISO 6506-1, Rockwell ISO 6508-1 and Knoop ISO 4545-1. A hardness tester in this device class is able to carry out all three or four hardness testing methods. It is available as a simple stand-alone hardness tester or as a real all-rounder (also as a fully automatic device).

For these hardness testers, we recommend consulting with our specialist consultants. Together with you, we ensure that the testing tasks are carried out in accordance with standards and efficiently. The following are tested:

  • Suitability of the test method depending on material and hardness
  • Minimum thickness at the test point/layer thickness
  • load level for the Brinell method
  • Workpiece size in relation to test room height/projection/support tables
  • Workpiece weight depending on handling (crane)
  • Desired results (e.g. individual test, hardness curve, 3D hardness scan, weld seam test)
  • documentation in a test certificate
  • Export of results for integration into your CAQ system, e.g. Q-DAS

We would be happy to advise you, give you a demonstration at your company, at one of the many thousands of customers in your area or for a detailed demonstration in our fully equipped showroom in Langenfeld (between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen).

Wide selection of INNOVATEST hardness testers

INNOVATEST has developed into the world's leading manufacturer of hardness testers and offers solutions for every application and every hardness test method. The universal hardness testers shown here cover all common test methods according to Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers. In addition, these hardness testers can be used to test according to Knoop and on plastics (ball indentation hardness). INNOVATEST offers the right device for every requirement and every budget in the class of universal hardness testers: from simple incoming goods inspection to complex applications for industry and research. Unique in this device class is the ease of use via the IMPRESSIONS testing software®. It can be operated intuitively via a touchscreen monitor and enables configuration or calling up stored test methods in a matter of seconds.

Some of the following features are only found on INNOVATEST hardness testers:

  • Revolving head with up to 8 positions: 3 optics + 3 indenters (no lens/indenter change)
  • Laser pointer + overview camera in the turret head: precise test position determination (unique worldwide)
  • Calibrated zoom of the overview camera (unique worldwide): Exact positioning at every zoom level
  • Test forces 10 g – 250 kgf with force measuring cell in closed control loop FALCON 5000 (unique worldwide)
  • The lowering test head independently finds workpiece surfaces of different heights; it can be tested in inaccessible places (grooves) (NEMESIS 9100 | 9600 | NEXUS 8100)

In larger industrial plants - especially in hardening plants - there is usually a separate hardness tester for each hardness scale. This saves the constant changing of lenses and indenters, increases operating safety and avoids errors caused by changing methods.

If these hardness testers are not used several times a day, purchasing several single-purpose devices is not economically viable. This is where the hardness testers with turret heads come into their own: simply change the test method using the touchscreen and start the test. The INNOVATEST hardness testers 9000 | 9500 | 5000 | 8000 | 9800 automatically switch to the correct indenter and the appropriate lens. This saves you several minutes of changeover time every time you change the test method and avoids incorrect measurements.

Such universal hardness testers with turret heads are practically indispensable for service providers in material testing. Different hardness scales are required for customers on a daily or even hourly basis and constantly changing to different testing methods costs valuable working time!

Almost all universal hardness testers shown here can optionally be automated to reduce personnel requirements for:

  • series tests with feeding system
  • Fully automatic tests with motorized XY table: CHD, SHD, NHD – hardness depth measurement + weld hardness test
  • Hardness scan (workpiece homogeneity with e.g. 3.000 measurements)
  • automated uniaxial tests (Jominy hardness test, linear hardness curve on one axis)

INNOVATEST hardness testers offer decisive advantages, especially when it comes to automation. For example, up to 33 test impressions must be created and measured on a weld sample. With the automated hardness testers from INNOVATEST, this measuring task can be carried out without the assistance of an employee.
Given that skilled personnel are becoming increasingly difficult to find, an automatic hardness tester (if used to a sufficient extent) is almost a must in order to remain competitive. Valuable employee time can be put to good use elsewhere if the machine carries out the hardness tests independently and reliably. This relieves the burden of monotonous work and can significantly reduce operating costs.
As an alternative to the universal hardness testers NEMESIS / FALCON 5000, the FALCON 500 or 600 hardness tester series is particularly suitable for hardness testing on weld seams.

Frequently asked questions about hardness testers

Which hardness tester is the right one for my testing task?

First, the appropriate hardness testing method (Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell, Knoop) must be selected. Then the frequency of use and the personnel deployment must be estimated. If a high volume of testing is expected, a fully automatic hardness tester should be considered rather than a manual stand-alone device. A fully automatic hardness tester can pay for itself after just one year if the volume of testing is high enough! Don't be afraid of the higher investment costs - your employees are more valuable and should not be used for monotonous work.

Our specialist consultants will be happy to help you choose the hardness tester that is right for you.

Which test pieces can be tested with the hardness testers?

We offer universal hardness testers for test forces from 1 gram (Vickers) to 3.000 kp (Brinell). With our heavy-duty hardness testers, even the heaviest samples can be tested safely and in accordance with standards. A turret head with several lenses and several indenters means that a large range of different test scales can be covered with a single hardness tester. This reduces the investment volume and minimizes the risk of errors when changing methods.

What are the special features of SCHÜTZ+LICHT hardness testers?

Our INNOVATEST hardness testers have numerous features, some of which are unique worldwide: test position determination using a laser pointer and overview camera in the turret head, calibrated zoom function of the overview camera, test forces from 1 g to 3000 kg using a force measuring cell in a closed control loop.
