Tensile testing machine QUASAR for standard-compliant material testing

For steel (ISO 6892), screws (ISO 898), reinforcing steel (DIN 488), components, wire ropes, chains, sheets

The Tensile testing machine QUASAR on GALDABINI enables precise and standard-compliant testing of mechanical-technological properties such as tensile strength, yield strength or elongation at break. It is suitable for materials such as Metal, Plastic, reinforcing steel as well as for components made of wire rope, screws or sheet metal. As a universally applicable solution, the tensile testing machine QUASAR is suitable for applications according to ISO 6892, ISO 898, DIN 488 and many other testing standards. In addition to the classic tensile test, this tensile testing machine can also reliably perform compression and bending tests. The results are evaluated using the testing software. LabTestForce, crosshead travel, and strain are recorded at high frequencies of up to 1000 Hertz and analyzed in real time. Based on this data, the software calculates over 500 predefined results that can be customized.

When testing safety-relevant components, such as fasteners or reinforcing steel, documented accuracy is essential. The QUASAR tensile testing machine not only meets all relevant standard requirements, but often exceeds them. Calibration to Thank you ASTM calibration is included as standard, or alternatively or additionally. Each machine is modularly customized to meet specific testing requirements. Since GALDABINI had already gained extensive experience in applying high loads using recirculating ball screws in the field of straightening machines, this development was a logical step to meet the increasing demands placed on testing machines in the heavy-duty sector.

Design and drive of the tensile testing machine QUASAR

The basis of the tensile testing machine is a precisely manufactured machine frame made in Europe. The appropriate design is selected depending on the required test force: For tabletop machines up to 2,5 kN, the compact C-design is used. For higher forces – from 5 to 100 kN – the stable O-design is used, which is available for both two-column tabletop machines and floor-standing machines from 200 kN up to 2000 kN. This design ensures a high frame rigidity and uniform force application.

The traverse is mounted on a low-wear Ball screw (see video below), which is powered by a gearbox and a brushless AC motor. Control is via a digital motor controller, which implements the drive commands based on the respective test speed. This drive concept has proven itself in quasi-static universal testing machines proven and allows both very slow and fast test sequences.

A unique feature of the QUASAR tensile testing machine is the control and evaluation electronics used. Instead of costly, manufacturer-specific systems, GALDABINI relies on industrial control technology from mechanical engineering. This not only reduces manufacturing costs but also increases the availability of replacement modules and scalability. The modular electronics can be easily expanded. In the event of a defect, the entire control system does not need to be replaced – simply replacing the affected module is sufficient, which can even be performed by the company's own maintenance personnel.

The actual control of the tensile testing machine is carried out via a virtual PLC within an integrated industrial PC. The firmware communicates directly with the measuring modules for force, crosshead travel, strain, and motor control. Test sequences are carried out in the Software LabTest defined, transferred as data packets to the electronics, where they are executed in real time. Controlling the machine via a Windows PC would be too slow from a technical perspective; the decentralized electronics ensure the rapid response of the machine components.

Based on this architecture, the QUASAR tensile testing machine can be used in a wide variety of applications. Typical areas of application include:

  • Metal tensile tests according to ISO 6892-1 (Method A and B)
  • Plastics testing according to ISO 527
  • Rubber tests according to DIN 53504 and ISO 37
  • Screw testing (ISO 898), reinforcing steel testing (DIN 488)
  • Peel and tear tests, shear tests, friction coefficient analyses
  • Compression tests on components (DIN 50106, press-in forces)
  • Bending tests according to ISO 178, ASTM D 790, ISO 14125 and others
  • Spring characteristics, settling behavior, cyclic load tests
