Used materials testing machines
with modernization and warranty
A used material testing machine is an alternative from a test force of:
- 100 kN – universal testing machine with spindle drive (a universal testing machine <50 kN “must be bought new – or do you want to work with DOS or WIN – XP?)
- 200 kN – hydraulic universal testing machine
If it has been overhauled (usually with simultaneous modernization), such a material testing machine meets all the requirements for precise, standard-compliant testing and efficient work. Such a tensile testing machine is usually equivalent to a new machine and is therefore the cheaper alternative. In individual cases, however, this must be researched according to your testing tasks. Please tell us your requirements and we will show you possible variants - new and used. We have used equipment from well-known manufacturers in stock in our warehouse:

Used material testing machines are not always the cheapest solution
Unless it is a special opportunity (surplus machine in the group, insolvency, company closure, etc.), the costs for a used testing machine must amortize the following:
- our purchase of the old machine
- Pickup
- warehouse stockpiling spare parts
- repair and painting
- Modernization – replacement of outdated measuring systems (pendulum manometer pointer displays, DOS software, etc., in all cases: outdated electronics)
- Delivery, commissioning, calibration
- warranties …
The extensive work, which varies from machine to machine and order to order, drives up the costs of modernization significantly. Let us put it this way: unless it is a really special machine with special equipment, modernizing a materials testing machine <50 kN is not economical. This is because these table machines can be manufactured very cheaply in series production and therefore with little personnel.
As an alternative, please be sure to ask for a new QUASAR machine.
Technical Limits of Used Tensile Testing Machines
For example, in an older hydraulic tensile testing machine with a wedge grip integrated into the load frame, it is not possible to use a probe arm extensometer (measuring the modulus of elasticity, Rp0,2 and also the elongation at break). These machines are usually equipped with a plunger piston. If the sample breaks spontaneously (without constriction), the energy stored in the loaded tensile sample is suddenly released. This causes the piston to jump: The strain gauge is carried away and damaged.
In addition, the fixation of the sample is lost when the force is released. The sample can become detached from the clamping jaws due to the discharge of the stored energy and damage the strain gauge.
For the manufacturers LOSENHAUSEN, WOLPERT, MOHR & FEDERHAFF, MFL, ..., the wedge clamp, which is part of the load frame due to its design, can only be replaced with a hydraulic parallel clamp after structural changes. The costs are correspondingly high.
Cheaper second-hand machines
Do not hesitate to request a quote for a new universal testing machine or tensile testing machine GALDABINI Up to 100 kN (spindle machines) or 200 kN (hydraulic machines), these are no more expensive than a modernized testing machine from a renowned competitor.
However, for spindle machines, modernization with control and evaluation is cheaper because “everything” that is usual for new machines is possible: From hydraulic clamping device, change systems for clamping devices, grooved plates or even a probe arm strain gauge (manual / fully automatic). Nevertheless, it is not always sensible to purchase a used materials testing machine <100 kN.

Our experience in modernizing universal testing machines is based on >30 years of experience. Since 2016 we have been supplying the state-of-the-art system from GALDABINI with BECKHOFF electronics. From 2019 also with the newly developed testing software LabTest. We have now modernized >1000 material testing machines and have been able to build up a great deal of know-how.
What are the limits when modernizing a universal testing machine?
The modernization of a machine must be planned properly. With simple equipment and test machines with low forces (<50 kN), it is usually cheaper to purchase a new machine from series production. In addition to the new electronics, a new motor controller and a new motor are often required. The sum of the new parts (electronics, software, AC motor, motor controller and the use of the technician) then quickly approaches an economic limit. And there remains a (small) residual risk that the load frame or the ball screws will be damaged.
The economic limit is much higher for hydraulic machines. With these machines, much more has to be replaced: the pump, valve block, control valve and motor also have to be replaced. Therefore, it must be said here: never modernize a hydraulic universal testing machine < 400 kN. In this case, it makes more sense to buy a new GALDABINI universal testing machine.
System RETROFIT – spindle machines
The RETROFIT system enables the modernization of an older material testing machine (e.g. used ZWICK 1488) to the current state of the art. This means that the control and evaluation are the same as those of a new machine. New electronics from GALDABINI are integrated into the testing machine. These communicate with the testing software via a future-oriented EtherCat interface (LAN protocol TCP/IP). The powerful control electronics receive a complete set of commands from the LabTest testing software to carry out a test and process them intelligently and in an event-controlled manner. During the test, the electronics record the measurement signals at a frequency of 1000 Hz. The recording takes place on the PC at a frequency of 500 Hz. The testing software enables ALL tests that are usual with static material testing machines:
- Tensile test according to standard for metal (ISO 6892-1 A and B), plastic (ISO 527, components, ropes, etc.
- Pressure tests according to standards or for testing components
- 3-point bending tests according to ISO
- Cyclic tests on the mechanical ageing of materials and components
- force-constancy tests
