More efficient operation / documentation via test certificate

Working with a hardness tester can be laborious and time-consuming. This is clear from the example of a weld seam test: Up to 30 (or more) measuring points can be required to test a single sample. Just creating the test impression with a non-automated device (for 30 impressions) takes around 15 minutes (positioning, lowering time, dwell time, unloading). Then there is the measurement. This often makes the use of an older hardness tester uneconomical. However, the hardness tester does not necessarily have to be replaced. Depending on the number of daily tests and the desired level of expansion, an existing device can be modernized to enable more efficient and economical testing.

Especially if the sole purpose is to streamline the measurement of hardness test indentations: Industry increasingly expects documentation of test results. If you currently evaluate hardness test indentations using conventional measuring equipment (measuring eyepiece and hardness evaluation tables) and manually enter the results into a worksheet or PC (Excel, CAQ, or ERP software), this can be significantly simplified.

Frequently asked questions about the modernization of hardness testing machines

Why should hardness testing machines be modernized?

  • With a modernization you measure more accurate: Outdated measuring systems usually use line measurements, which estimate the distance between two measuring lines. Electronics measure with point and pixel precision.
  • The measurements can be more comfortable and fatigue-free (viewing eyepiece) – concentrate on the result and not on the measurement
  • The Documentation is done "in passing": With the modern hardness testing software HardworX, it is no longer necessary to obtain the hardness value from a table. Furthermore, the hardness value is saved and graphically presented: The results can be printed out, including an SPC control chart, statistics, histograms, or hardness diagrams.
  • Reading and transmission errors are eliminated: The measured values are automatically transferred to the hardness testing software HardworX for further processing
  • Automatic result export for external data processing is one of the many standards

Is only an electronic measuring system attached to the device / is more possible?

This depends on your requirements and the device type:

In an optical hardness tester with a ground glass screen (WOLPERT Dia-Testor, FRANK Frankoskop, REICHERTER Briviskop), only a digital scale can usually be installed for electronic measurement of the Vickers/Brinell indentation. The outdated ground glass measuring ruler is removed and replaced with a digital scale. This allows the user to conveniently enter the hardness test indentation. The diagonals of the hardness indentation are transferred to the testing software at the touch of a button, and the result is immediately available for further processing.

Some competitors recommend integrating a video camera with image processing even with a ground glass screen. We advise against this: The relatively high inherent magnification of a video camera requires an expensive, lower-magnification lens. Nevertheless, only limited use is possible, as large test indentations (on soft materials) lie outside the field of view and can no longer be measured (limiting it to a single-purpose device for high hardness). Furthermore, the total costs (eyepiece holder, video camera, testing software, additional lens, conversion costs, calibration) are disproportionate. If such equipment seems necessary, we recommend a new hardness testing machine, which was developed for this technology and offers a coherent overall concept.

For a hardness tester for Rockwell (only available for WOLPERT Dia-Testor | HT2000 | HT1a)
The analog Rockwell dial gauge can be replaced with a digital dial gauge. Using a special software feature, this machine is able to measure the indentation in the material electronically. The HardworX testing software delivers a hardness value immediately after the load is removed, which is then processed accordingly.

For hardness measuring instruments for Micro-Vickers / Macro-Vickers (small load hardness testers)
With a mechanical loading system (dead weights), only a video camera (with optional image processing) can be integrated. Modern imaging techniques can then relieve a specialist of much of the workload at a hardness measuring device. With a mouse click, the diagonals of the hardness test indentation can be entered in seconds and thus conveniently evaluated (optional: automatic measurement via image processing). Incorrect evaluations and transmission errors can no longer occur – the error rate drops to almost zero, and the evaluation process is accelerated enormously.

In addition, the XY table can be equipped with electronic micrometer screws. Parallel to the hardness value, the position of the digital micrometer screw is then queried and displayed together with the hardness value in a hardness diagram and the hardness depth is evaluated.

Typically, such devices (ZWICK 323 and 3212 | FRANK Finotest | REICHERTER KL 1 and 2 | WOLPERT-V-Testor etc.) were manufactured without electronics. Retrofitting these devices with a swivel system (between the indenter and the measuring optics) is not economically viable: These types must still be operated manually and are only upgraded by the more convenient measurement. However, it should be mentioned that the evaluation offers a significant rationalization effect, especially for subsequent evaluations (compared to manual evaluation).

  • CHD (EHT) case hardening depth-hardening depth
  • SHD (Rht) surface hardening depth
  • NHD (Nht) nitriding hardness depth
  • CD (At) carburization depth
  • CLT (VS) bonding layer thickness
  • hardness gradients on components
  • weld hardness profile

The INNOVATEST Hardness testers with motorized turret head + motorized load cycle enable complete automation:

  • Camera measuring system CMS: Video camera with testing software for convenient hardness indentation measurement at the click of a mouse (image analysis option)
  • CMS Level 3: All test impressions are generated automatically and measured manually or by image analysis
  • CMS Level 3: like 3, but with automatic focusing and fully automatic hardness indentation measurement
  • It couldn’t be easier: position the test piece, set the test direction and press START!

In an automated test sequence, the ground (and polished) sample is positioned on the motorized cross table under the optics of the. After the starting position has been found, the test method only needs to be informed of the orientation of the test object with a mouse click. After START, the test impressions are now created at the exact position (semi-automatic) and then measured automatically (fully automatic). The hardness measuring device carries out all steps independently (fully automatic).

The Vickers hardness value is calculated, recorded, and displayed as a curve. By entering limit values, material tolerances can be monitored.

Modernization of hardness testers with ground glass

For universal hardness testing machines: Digital scale + HardworX software

  • KARL FRANK Types Frankoscope…
  • WPM Type HPO
  • REICHERTER type Briviskop
  • GNEHM

The equipment shown here is theThe original modernization for hardness testers with ground glass: Digital scale SHP150 for the evaluation of hardness test indentations according to Vickers + Brinell and software with database, statistics, SPC function, histogram.

Back in 1994, we were the first provider to use a digital ruler to measure the diagonals of a hardness test indentation on a ground-glass hardness tester. These measurements are transferred via an interface to a PC/the HardworX testing software, which converts them into a hardness value, saves them, and statistically processes them. This technology has since become the standard for retrofitting ground-glass hardness testers and has been copied by almost all competitors for some time. With over 850 systems sold, this system is extremely sophisticated and meets all requirements for increased accuracy (compared to the old ground-glass ruler) and the increasingly important documentation requirements.

How does our system differ from competitors’ copies?

Experience

None of our competitors sold more systems. We've leveraged this experience and continually adapted the software to meet the needs of the industry. When comparing, please make sure that testing software is actually offered. Some extremely inexpensive systems use Excel software to calculate and print the hardness value. This is far from the level of professionalism that our system standard offers:

  • Archiving in a database
  • Correction for curved surfaces
  • Export results to other CAQ software or SAP…
  • Software calibration of incorrect magnifications
  • and another 30 arguments that distinguish our product from simple solutions

If you compare the price alone, you'll get a "measuring system" that delivers a hardness value—but not at a level we can recommend. The outstanding feature of our system is the intuitive, professional software, which enables very efficient work with a high level of user comfort. Almost all of our customers put this system into operation without our support!

Quality

As the inventor of affordable modernization, we have once again set a new standard with improved technology and a zero-point-stable system. We use measuring instruments from MITUTOYO (as the first provider): The zero point is no longer lost when the scale is turned off. This prevents any possible incorrect measurements due to an incorrect zero point. While this technology is somewhat more expensive, it is the better solution. Therefore, price should not be the only factor when comparing.

Support

We know where the problems lie. Our technical support offers straightforward, fast, and free assistance. It's virtually impossible for these systems (or their software) to fail to be restored to working order:

  • with simple tips that you can get by phone or
  • using our remote maintenance software

With this, we can connect to your PC via the Internet (if you allow us access) and solve your problems. With the experience of more than 980 systems sold (as of December 21.12.2017, XNUMX) and modernizations, we have already solved "your problem." Digital scale SHP150 and hardness testing software HardworX are the first choice when it comes to quality.

HardworX – Standard: Convenient storage and evaluation for ground glass hardness testers

Incl. database, statistics, histogram, SPC function / control chart

  • Integrated conversion (DIN EN ISO 18265): N/mm² (MPa), HRC, HRA, HRB,…
  • Monitoring: Tolerance / intervention limit with error message
  • Test planning: test method, magnification, conversion, limit values, statistics, SPC…
  • Sequence control – serial testing without further PC operation
  • Data export in ASCII format or as WINDOWS – Office ACCESS database
  • Standard-compliant, automatic evaluation for sintered metal tests
  • Individual header fields / certificate header defined
  • In case of incorrect magnification: Correction of the optics via software

The conventional Vickers or Brinell test is time-consuming and prone to errors. The complete documentation required for a modern quality assurance system is not guaranteed. The conventional hardness test according to Vickers / Brinell is very complex:

  • Checking the optics used + the scale
  • measurement of the hardness impression
  • Calculating the mean
  • Determination of hardness using hardness comparison table
  • Determination of failures / statistics
  • Entry in a protocol and its printout

This very cost-effective upgrade is therefore ideal for all hardness testers with a ground glass screen: Efficient evaluation and documentation: No calculator, tables, etc. Simple measurement by diagonal tapping using a digital scale/foot switch. The SHP 150 system is designed so that the standard scale is simply replaced with the new system. The existing scale fastening system (sliding blocks) is reused. No technical modifications (interface card) are required in the PC, as the system operates via a serial interface (RS-232, e.g., COM1 or USB interface). This allows the system to be commissioned without the costly trip of a service technician.

Modernization of hardness testers with touchscreen PC

Digital scale SHP150 together with PC mounted on the hardness tester

The modernization of hardness testers further thought: For ergonomic operation and for confined spaces, we developed an alternative:

The SHP touchscreen system is permanently attached to the body of a hardness tester. As the PC is operated directly on the hardness tester, this makes operation much easier. The software has been revised for this task and enables operation via finger touch. A virtual keyboard is displayed for text input (sample number, etc.). And if you want to do more complex work, you can of course use a normal mouse and keyboard. The SHP touchscreen system does not need to be installed by our technicians. Your maintenance department will certainly be able to attach the monitor arm to the hardness tester. And the software is so easy to use that almost all customers prefer to set it up themselves.

In addition to the SHP150 evaluation system (digital scale), a digitization of the Rockwell measurement can also be connected to this system. See SHP-Rockwell.

Rockwell modernization for WOLPERT hardness testers

for Dia-Testor 2rc / Dia-Testor 2rcS / HT2000 / HT1a

For the Hardness tester from the manufacturer WOLPERT for the Rockwell method we have developed a special modernization. In this, the analog Rockwell dial gauge is replaced by a digital dial gauge. With a special algorithm:

  • the test software indicates that the preload has been reached
  • the application of the main load (the user triggers the test load) is suggested
  • shows the Rockwell hardness value immediately after the load is removed

To integrate this equipment into your hardness tester, the involvement of a technician is required.
In addition to this system, a digital scale for Vickers / Brinell measurement is also available

Indenter for hardness testers with DAkkS certificate

Especially with a DAkkS – Calibrations of your hardness testers require a valid DAKKS, UKAS, ASTM calibration certificate for the indenters. This calibration certificate includes the precise measurement of the indenter's geometry. Vickers also distinguishes between standard Vickers indenters and micro-Vickers indenters for the smallest test loads (specific selection of indenters based on the "short ridge length" criterion of the Vickers pyramid). For Rockwell calibration, a functional test is also required (by the indenter calibration service provider).
